Cell Phones & Personal Electronic Devices  

In accordance with Kansas House Bill 2299, students are prohibited from using personal electronic communication devices during the school day at all Kansas schools. This includes cell phones, smart watches, wireless headphones or earbuds, tablets, and other personal electronic devices. 

WPS BOE Policy P1232 Student Use of Personal Electronic Devices

1. Students may not possess or use personal electronic devices during the school day. "School Day" means all time on school premises between 8 am – 3:10 pm (8 am – 2:30 pm on Wednesdays) , including passing periods, lunch periods, instructional time, structured time, and unstructured time. Devices include cell phones, smart watches, tablets, computers, earbuds, smart glasses, and similar communication devices. District-issued devices are not included in this definition.

2. Students are encouraged to leave devices at home.

3. If a student brings a device to school, it must be powered off and stored in the student’s locker.

4. 11^th and 12^th graders who leave campus for lunch, may get their device out their locker to have while off-campus but will put it back in their locker when they return from lunch.

 Your student will be assigned a locker to store their personal electronic device throughout the day.  We understand this is a change for students and families, but we believe the benefits will be well worth it. By reducing distractions during the school day, students have more opportunities to engage in learning, build meaningful relationships, and be fully present in their school experience. Your partnership is key to making this successful. We appreciate your support in encouraging your student to follow the policy each day and helping us create a focused, positive learning environment where every student can thrive. School-issued technology will be provided to all students.

Academic Integrity 

At Wichita North High School, students are expected to demonstrate honesty, responsibility, and integrity in all academic work. Students should arrive on time, engage in learning, follow classroom expectations, and complete assignments honestly and independently. 

Academic dishonesty includes, but is not limited to: 

• Cheating on assignments, quizzes, or tests  

• Plagiarism or submitting another person’s work as your own  

• Unauthorized use of AI, technology, or outside assistance  

• Falsifying or altering academic or attendance records  

• Misrepresenting who completed academic work  

Students who violate academic integrity expectations may receive academic and/or disciplinary consequences determined by the teacher and administration. 

Academic Letter 

Full-time students who maintain a weighted GPA of 3.5 or higher for two consecutive semesters at Wichita North High School are eligible to receive an Academic Letter. Courses numbered in the 9000 series are not included in GPA calculations for academic letter eligibility. 

Administration 

Wichita North High School is organized into five student academies designed to provide personalized support and help students feel connected throughout their high school experience. Each academy includes an administrator, counselor, and secretary who work together to support student success. Every student is assigned to an academy.

Advocacy 

Advocacy at Wichita North High School helps students stay connected, supported, and prepared for life after high school. Each student is paired with a staff member who supports academic progress, graduation planning, goal setting, and future readiness. 

Closed Advocacy 

Mondays & Thursdays include required lessons and activities such as: 

• Grade checks  

• School information and expectations  

• Digital citizenship lessons  

• Assessment preparation  

• Xello/IPOS career and college readiness activities  

Through Xello, students build their Individual Plan of Study (IPOS) by exploring careers, colleges, scholarships, resumes, and future opportunities. Completion of IPOS is a state, district, and building expectation. 

Open Advocacy 

Tuesdays & Fridays provide time for students to study or visit teachers for extra help. Students must report to Advocacy first and have a pre-signed pass to attend a help session. 

Attendance & Grading 

Advocacy attendance is required daily. The course is graded pass/fail using USD 259 Employability Scales focused on work habits, responsibility, personal growth, and character development.

Athletics & Activities 

Athletics and activities are an important part of the student experience at Wichita North High School, providing opportunities for students to build leadership, teamwork, school pride, and lifelong skills. North High proudly competes as a member of the Greater Wichita Athletic League (GWAL) and the Kansas State High School Activities Association (KSHSAA). 

Physical Examination & Online Registration 

All USD 259 student athletes are required to complete the online registration process through the North High Athletics website before participating in any conditioning, camp, practice, or sport activity. A current KSHSAA physical form must be completed annually by a medical provider on or after May 1 in order to be valid for summer activities and the upcoming school year.  

Registration may be completed using a computer or mobile device. 

 All required student, parent, and legal guardian signatures must be completed and uploaded during the online registration process. 

Online registration and approval must be completed before a student may participate in any athletic conditioning, practice, camp, or competition. 

Eligibility 

To participate in KSHSAA sponsored activities, students must have passed five classes of unit weight during the previous semester and must currently be enrolled in and attending five classes of unit weight. Students who drop below five classes may become ineligible to participate. 

Students must also remain in good standing and meet all KSHSAA eligibility and transfer requirements, if applicable.

 Attendance 

Regular attendance plays an important role in student success at Wichita North High School. Students are expected to attend all classes each day and arrive on time ready to learn. Families are encouraged to schedule appointments and other activities outside of the school day whenever possible. 

Reporting an Absence 

Parents or guardians should contact the Attendance Office any time a student is absent. Notification should be made prior to the absence whenever possible and no later than 72 hours after the absence. Failure to notify the school may result in the absence being recorded as unexcused. 

When leaving a voicemail, please include: 

• Parent/guardian name  

• Student name and grade  

• Date(s) of absence  

• Reason for absence 

Per WPS Board Policy 1461, "Valid Excuse for Absences" is defined as: 

• Personal illness 

• Medical or dental treatment, examination or recuperation;  

• Death or serious illness in immediate family;  

• Absence because of a religious holiday. 

• Approval by school administration, secured prior to the absence;  

• Circumstances or conditions which, in the opinion of the principal or designee of the school the student attends, constitutes a valid excuse. 

Attendance Expectations 

In accordance with Kansas Compulsory Attendance Law and WPS Board Policy 1461, regular school attendance is required for all students. Excessive unexcused absences may result in truancy intervention and referral to outside agencies. 

Under the Kansas “3, 5, 7 Rule,” a student may be considered truant after: 

• 3 consecutive unexcused absences  

• 5 unexcused absences in a semester  

• 7 unexcused absences in a school year  

Families can expect communication and support from the school when attendance concerns arise. 

Medical Absences 

Students accumulating more than 96 hours of illness or medical absences may be required to provide a doctor’s note for additional absences to be excused. 

Missed Assignments 

Students are responsible for completing assignments missed during absences. Teachers will make reasonable efforts to support students in completing missed work. 

 Attendance Expectations for Activities & Athletics 

Students must attend at least half of the school day in order to participate in an extracurricular activity, athletic event, game, contest, or practice that afternoon or evening. If the event takes place on a Saturday, students must be in attendance on Friday in order to participate. 

Exceptions may only be made when written permission is provided by a physician or dentist stating that the student may participate after missing the school day. 

This policy reflects the school’s primary mission of education. While participation in activities and athletics is highly valued, attendance in class takes priority. If a student is too ill to attend school, they are also considered too ill to participate in practices or events. 

AVID  

The AVID program at Wichita North High School is designed to help students build the skills, confidence, and habits needed for success in high school, college, careers, and beyond. AVID supports students through rigorous instruction, academic support, collaboration, and opportunities that promote college and career readiness.  

The AVID curriculum is built around the WICOR framework:

Through these strategies, students develop strong study habits, critical thinking skills, leadership, and academic confidence to support success in all subject areas.

Students at Wichita North High School are expected to contribute to a safe, respectful, and positive learning environment. This includes attending classes regularly, engaging in learning activities, completing assigned work, and following reasonable directions from staff members. Being part of Wichita Public Schools comes with the responsibility of demonstrating respectful and appropriate behavior at school, on school property, and at school sponsored activities. 

Threatening, intimidating, or harmful behavior toward students or staff will not be tolerated and may result in disciplinary action in accordance with USD 259 Board of Education policies. 

Battery or Assault of a Staff Member 

In accordance with BOE Policy 1462: 

• Any student found to have committed battery against a school staff member at school, on school property, or at a school sponsored activity shall receive a mandatory expulsion for 186 school days.  

• Any student found to have committed assault against a school staff member may face disciplinary action up to and including expulsion for 186 school days. 

Bullying Prevention 

Wichita North High School and USD 259 are committed to maintaining a safe, respectful, and inclusive environment for all students. Bullying of any kind, including physical bullying, cyberbullying, and relational aggression, will not be tolerated and will result in disciplinary action in accordance with BOE Policy 1462. 

Students are encouraged to report bullying concerns to a trusted staff member so the school can provide support and address concerns promptly. 

Bullying is behavior that: 

• Is intended to cause harm, fear, or distress  

• Typically happens repeatedly over time  

• Involves an imbalance of power between individuals  

Cyberbullying includes using phones, social media, messaging platforms, or other digital tools to send, post, or share harmful messages, images, or content. 

 Tobacco & Vape Products  

In accordance with BOE Policy 1464, the possession or use of tobacco products, tobacco paraphernalia, electronic cigarettes, vape pens, or look alike products is prohibited on school property and at school sponsored activities.  

Students who use or possess these items in school buildings, on campus, or during school activities will be subject to disciplinary action in accordance with USD 259 policies. 

Drugs & Alcohol  

Wichita North High School is committed to maintaining a safe and healthy learning environment for all students. In accordance with BOE Policy 1464, the possession, use, sale, manufacture, or distribution of alcohol, drugs, controlled substances, unauthorized prescription medications, inhalants, or drug paraphernalia is prohibited on school property and at school sponsored activities. 

Students who possess, use, appear to be under the influence of, or whose behavior appears altered by these substances will be subject to disciplinary action in accordance with USD 259 policies. 

Students involved in the sale, manufacture, trafficking, or distribution of prohibited substances may face mandatory expulsion from Wichita Public Schools for 186 school days as outlined in BOE Policy 1465. 

Weapons & Safety  

Maintaining a safe school environment is a top priority at Wichita North High School. In accordance with Kansas law (KSA 72-6133) and BOE Policy 1466, weapons, firearms, replica firearms, or other dangerous articles are prohibited at school, on school property, and at school sponsored activities. 

Students found in possession of a weapon, firearm, or replica firearm may receive a mandatory expulsion from Wichita Public Schools for 186 school days. Students who possess or use any object in a way that could cause bodily harm or place others in fear of bodily harm may also face disciplinary action up to and including expulsion for 186 school days. 

Student involvement in gang related activity may also result in disciplinary action, including possible expulsion from USD 259 for 186 school days. 

Emergency Safety Interventions (ESI) 

The safety of students and staff is a priority at Wichita North High School. In accordance with BOE Policy 5116 and Kansas regulations (K.A.R. 91-42-1 and 91-42-2), Emergency Safety Interventions (ESI), including physical restraint, may only be used in situations when a student presents an immediate danger to themselves or others or, in limited situations, is engaged in the violent destruction of property.  

Every effort will be made to prevent the need for restraint through the use of less restrictive interventions and supports. Restraint is never used as punishment, discipline, coercion, retaliation, or for staff convenience. 

Students are to park bikes in the bike racks located around the school grounds. They should be locked to prevent theft. Students should place skateboards in lockers upon arrival at school. There will be no bike riding, skateboarding, or roller-skating on campus. Upon arrival to school sidewalks, students are to walk bikes and carry skateboards and roller-skate. Failure to do so may result in disciplinary action.

️Building Entry & Security  

To help maintain a safe learning environment, all students at Wichita North High School are required to pass through OpenGate metal detectors when entering the building.  

Laptops and similar devices may be placed on the table or held above the scanners while entering. Students are expected to follow all directions from staff and Security during the entry process. 

The Main Entrance, Tower Entrance, and Statue Entrance open beginning at 7:30 am. After 7:55 am, only the Main Entrance and Tower Entrance will remain open. After 8 am, only the Main Entrance will be used for building entry.  

Building Hours & Library  

Building hours for students at Wichita North High School are 7:30 am – 3:30 pm. Students must be off campus by 3:30 pm unless participating in a supervised school activity, practice, club, or event.  

Students attending evening activities, including games and dances, should be picked up within 30 minutes after the event concludes. Students not picked up on time may lose the privilege of attending future activities during that season. 

Library Information  

The library is open before school, during lunch, and after school. Students should only be visiting the library during class periods for the purpose of checking out a book.  Students must have a pass and check in with the library clerk upon arrival. Students should only be working in the library for academic purposes and with staff supervision.  

Bullying will not be tolerated at North. BOE P1464 defines the policy guidelines regarding inappropriate behavior and possible consequences. Bullying occurs in all forms including, but not limited to, appearance, status with a peer group (social power), intellectual, socio-economic, gender, race, sexual orientation, ethnicity, etc. Bullying in any form is prohibited on school property, in a school vehicle, or at a school sponsored activity or event. In addition, bullying is prohibited while utilizing school property. Bullying includes Cyberbullying. In compliance with

K.S.A. 72-6147 and amendments thereto, the Board developed and adopted a plan that addresses bullying. In addition to disciplinary action described in BOE Policy P5113 - Suspension and/or Expulsion of Students, students who violate the bullying prohibition may be reported to local law

Clear Bag Policy 

For select sporting events, the Greater Wichita Athletic League (GWAL) enforces a Clear Bag Policy to enhance safety and security while helping speed up the entry process. This policy applies to varsity football games and all basketball games.

Parent & Student Communication  

Wichita North High School and USD 259 use ParentVUE and StudentVUE to help families stay connected to student learning and school information. Through these online portals, parents and students can access attendance, assignments, grades, schedules, and other important updates.  

ParentVUE also allows families to update contact information, which is important for receiving school and district communications. Parents and students are encouraged to check ParentVUE and StudentVUE regularly throughout the school year. 

ParentLink  

USD 259 uses ParentLink to communicate with families through phone calls, text messages, and email notifications. ParentLink messages may include: 

• Attendance notifications  

• School announcements and events  

• Emergency and weather-related information  

• Safety updates and school closures  

Families should ensure their ParentVUE contact information remains current in order to receive all district and school communications.

Detention 

Students may be assigned after school detention by an administrator for disciplinary reasons. Detention is held after school in the library from 3:30PM to 5:00PM at Wichita North High School. 

Students are expected to report on the assigned day and follow all expectations during detention. Failure to serve an assigned detention may result in additional disciplinary consequences, including in-school suspension.

Dress Code  

The purpose of the USD 259 Student Dress Code is to maintain a positive school environment, promote safety and respect, and support effective teaching and learning at Wichita North High School.  

Students and families are encouraged to review Wichita Public Schools Non-Standard Dress Code Policy (BOE Policy 1474) for additional information and expectations. 

P1474-A NON-STANDARD DRESS CODES 

Establishes minimum dress code expectations for all Wichita Public Schools to support a safe, respectful, and productive learning environment while ensuring consistent, non-discriminatory enforcement. 

Key guidelines include: 

• Clothing and accessories may not display profanity, drugs, alcohol, weapons, violence, sexual content, hate symbols, or gang affiliation.  

• Head coverings may not conceal identity except for approved religious, medical, or disability accommodations.  

• Tops and bottoms must provide appropriate coverage and fully cover undergarments.  

• Footwear must be worn at all times and be safe for school activities.  

• Jewelry and accessories may not pose safety risks or contain overwhelming fragrances.  

• Dress code enforcement must be respectful, consistent, and aligned with district non-discrimination policies and the Student Code of Conduct.  

• Schools will offer compliant clothing options when needed. 

Emergency Procedures & Safety Drills  

The safety of students and staff at Wichita North High School is a top priority. Throughout the school year, emergency procedures and safety drills will be conducted in accordance with Kansas law and district safety guidelines.  

At times, emergency measures may be necessary due to severe weather, safety concerns, or other emergency situations. Students and staff should follow all directions provided by school personnel during drills or emergencies. 

Fire Drills 

Fire drills are conducted quarterly as required by Kansas law. Teachers will review evacuation routes and procedures with students, and evacuation information is posted in each classroom. All students and staff are required to exit the building when the fire alarm sounds. 

Tornado Drills 

Tornado drills are conducted as required by Kansas law. Students should follow staff directions and move quickly and quietly to designated shelter areas during drills or severe weather situations. 

Final Exams  

Final exams provide students an opportunity to demonstrate learning from the course and help prepare them for post-secondary expectations. Final assessments may include a traditional test, project, paper, presentation, or other cumulative demonstration of learning and should comprise 5–10% of the final course grade. 

Participation in final exams is required for all students. Teachers will communicate final exam expectations through course syllabi and ongoing class communication. 

Wichita North High School does not approve requests for early finals. All students will take finals during the designated finals schedule. Families are encouraged to plan appointments, trips, and other activities around the published final exam schedule.  Seniors will complete finals prior to graduation according to the senior finals schedule.

Fundraisers  

Fundraisers must be pre-approved by the Athletics Assistant Principal. Fundraisers are for raising money for school athletics teams, activities, clubs, or organizations. Students are not allowed to sell personal items at school. 

Grades & Progress Reports  

Students and families at Wichita North High School are encouraged to regularly monitor academic progress through StudentVUE and ParentVUE.  

Grades are updated approximately every two weeks and may be accessed online along with attendance information. Midterm progress reports are available every nine weeks through ParentVUE. Official report cards are posted at the end of each semester grading period through ParentVUE. 

Commencement, Graduation Requirements & Diplomas 

In accordance with BOE Policy 6335: Graduation Exercises and Senior Convocation, seniors may participate in commencement ceremonies only after completing all graduation requirements. 

Graduation requirements and the awarding of diplomas are governed by BOE Policy 6333: Graduation Rule and Diplomas. Students must successfully complete all district and state graduation requirements in order to receive a diploma from Wichita North High School.

Early Graduate 

Applicants should request early graduation during enrollment of their sophomore year. Early graduation applications will not be considered after August 20th of junior year.

Class of 2028+ Midterm Graduate Application 

Guidance and Counseling 

The counseling team at Wichita North High School is here to support students academically, socially, and emotionally. Counselors assist with class schedules, graduation planning, college and career readiness, and personal concerns that may impact student success. 

Students are encouraged to utilize college, career, scholarship, and financial aid resources available through the counseling office and the College & Career Center (CCC) located in the library. Counselors are available to help students plan for life after high school and explore post-secondary opportunities. 

Hall Passes 

When students are out of class, they miss out on important learning opportunities in the classroom. Students are allowed two hall passes per day. Students are encouraged to use passing periods to take care of their personal needs. Students out of class on a pass have 6 minutes to return to class. Wichita North High School uses Synergy Hall pass; an electronic hall pass system – Students must have an approved digital pass in Synergy Hall Pass to leave class, allowing staff to monitor when and how long they are out of the classroom. Students must have their student agenda to be given a hall pass.

Harassment & Sexual Harassment Prevention  

Wichita North High School and USD 259 are committed to providing a safe, respectful, and inclusive learning environment for all students. Harassment and sexual harassment by students, employees, or others will not be tolerated and may result in disciplinary action in accordance with BOE Policy 1116.  

Sexual Harassment Includes: 

• Unwelcome sexual comments, behavior, or conduct  

• Actions or words that interfere with a student’s ability to learn or participate in school activities  

• Behavior that is offensive, intimidating, embarrassing, threatening, or demeaning based on sex  

• Conduct that may occur once or repeatedly over time  

Harassment Includes: 

• Verbal, written, digital, or physical behavior directed at an individual or group based on race, color, religion, sex, national origin, age, disability, or other protected status  

• Creating an intimidating, hostile, or offensive school environment  

• Behavior that interferes with a student’s educational opportunities or school experience  

Students are encouraged to report concerns to a trusted staff member, counselor, administrator, or school resource officer so concerns can be addressed promptly and appropriately. 

Health Services & Medication  

The health and safety of students at Wichita North High School is a priority. Parents and guardians should notify the school nurse of any medical conditions or health concerns that may require attention during the school day, including conditions such as asthma, diabetes, seizures, or severe allergies.  

Illness or Injury 

Students who become ill during the school day should request a pass from their teacher before reporting to the nurse’s office. If a student needs to leave school due to illness, the nurse will contact a parent or guardian and assist with dismissal procedures. All students leaving school due to illness must check out through their Academy Office. Students who leave without following proper procedures may be considered truant. 

Students returning from a prolonged medical absence may be required to provide documentation from a healthcare provider before returning to school. Students are responsible for completing missed assignments during absences. 

Immunizations 

Kansas law requires students to maintain current immunization records in order to attend school. Families should provide updated immunization documentation to the school nurse as needed. Questions regarding immunization requirements may be directed to the nurse’s office. 

Medication at School 

In accordance with USD 259 Board Policy, medication may only be administered at school with written authorization from both a parent or guardian and a licensed healthcare provider. This includes prescription and over the counter medications. All medication must be provided in the original, properly labeled container. Families may contact the school nurse for medication authorization forms or additional information. 

Lockers  

Lockers are available for students and may be requested through Security in Room A108 during the first weeks of school. Students are responsible for keeping lockers locked, clean, and in good condition.  

Student lockers remain the property of USD 259 and may be inspected periodically for cleanliness, maintenance, or the presence of prohibited items in accordance with district policy and applicable law. Students’ rights will be protected if a locker search is initiated by law enforcement. 

Students are encouraged not to share lockers or locker combinations and should avoid leaving money or valuables in lockers. Damage, graffiti, or defacing of lockers may result in charges to the student assigned to the locker. Duplicate books found in lockers may be removed and returned to the appropriate department. 

Students experiencing locker issues should contact Security for assistance. 

 Lost and Found 

Lost and found items should be turned into Security. 

Wichita North High School and USD 259 are not responsible for personal items that are lost, stolen, or unattended. Families may wish to contact their homeowner’s or renter’s insurance provider regarding possible coverage for personal belongings. 

 In-School Suspension (ISS) 

The In School Suspension (ISS) Room provides students with an opportunity to continue academic work while temporarily losing certain school privileges because of inappropriate behavior.

Obligations 

Any outstanding financial obligations not resolved by the end of the school year may be referred to a collection agency in accordance with district procedures. Seniors with a financial obligation are not eligible to participate in the graduation ceremony. 

Open Access to Rigorous Curriculum 

Students who wish to challenge themselves through Advanced Placement (AP) and honors level coursework are encouraged to enroll in these classes. Students and families should carefully consider the rigor and expectations of these courses when making enrollment decisions. 

At Wichita North High School, we believe all students should have open access to rigorous academic opportunities. AP courses do not require prerequisites, applications, or teacher recommendations. Counselors may also use academic data and student performance indicators to encourage students to consider advanced coursework. 

Students who enroll in an AP or honors level course during enrollment will not be permitted to drop the course after schedules are finalized. 

Open House  

Open House is a tradition at Wichita North High School and takes place each August (Tuesday, August 11th, 2026). Families are encouraged to check the school calendar for the event date and join us to meet teachers, learn more about classes, and connect with the North High community.  

Student clubs and organizations may also offer food, merchandise, and activities during the event. 

Out-of-School Suspension 

Out of school suspension means you are not to be on school grounds or facilities for the length of your suspension. This includes attendance at, or participation in school and after-school sponsored activities. 

Students suspended from school are entitled to receive missing work and may turn it in for full credit. 

Expulsion specifics are determined by the District Hearing Officer. During the expulsion period, students cannot be on any public school grounds, including attendance at or participation in school and after-school sponsored activities.

Parking  

Parking on the campus of Wichita North High School is a privilege. Students are expected to follow all parking lot rules, traffic laws, and school expectations. Parking privileges may be suspended or revoked for students who violate parking regulations or engage in unsafe or illegal conduct on school property.  

Student Parking Lot 

The student parking lot is located on the east side of Rochester Street and extends into the south portion of the former Dillons lot. Students must park only in designated student parking spaces and between marked yellow lines. Backing into parking spaces is not permitted. Areas marked with yellow striped lines, yellow curbs, or posted signage are designated as no parking areas. 

Students wishing to park on campus must: 

• Possess a valid driver’s license or permit  

• Register their vehicle with North High Security  

• Purchase and display a valid parking decal  

Parking decals are available during enrollment on a first come, first served basis for $10 per year and must be displayed from the rearview mirror. 

Restricted Parking Areas 

Students are prohibited from parking in: 

• Staff parking lots  

• Visitor parking  

• Handicap parking  

• Family Resource Center (FRC) parking areas  

• Posted no parking zones  

Parking violations may result in a $10 ticket, parent notification, and possible suspension or revocation of parking privileges for repeat offenses. 

Traffic Flow & Safety 

Student drop off and pick up should occur only in designated student parking lot areas. The student lot is accessible from Waco and 13th Streets to help improve safety, reduce congestion on Rochester Street, and allow school buses access to the 13th Street lot. The Rochester gate at 14th Street will be closed to through traffic from 8:00 am–3:00 pm. 

The speed limit in the student parking lot is 10 MPH. Excessive speed, careless driving, and unsafe behavior are prohibited. Riding on vehicle hoods, rooftops, or areas not intended for passengers is not allowed. Parking lots are not designated gathering areas, and students without a scheduled class or activity are expected to leave campus. 

Bicycles & Motorcycles 

Bicycles must be secured in the bicycle cage near the Statue Entrance off 13th Street. Motorcycles must be parked in designated student parking spaces, registered with Security, and display a valid parking decal. 

Vehicle Safety 

Students are encouraged to: 

1. Lock vehicles at all times  

2. Keep valuables out of sight  

3. Report accidents or concerns to Security immediately  

In the event of an accident, students should exchange contact and insurance information with the other driver, document damages with photos if possible, and report the incident to Security promptly. 

Wichita North High School and USD 259 are not responsible for theft, loss, or damage to vehicles or personal property on school grounds.

Rights and Responsibilities for Students and Parents/Guardians 

The purpose of every school handbook is to help parents/guardians and students in understanding RIGHTS AND RESPONSIBILITIES. When a question or problem arises, the first step in resolving the problem or getting an answer should be where the problem or question started, i.e., another student, teacher/staff, or building administration. 

Parents/Guardians and students have the right to know the due process procedures followed by USD 259 if they disagree with the interpretation of school policies. Due process is used to provide a quick and orderly method of resolving school-related conflicts. 

Parents/Guardians and students have the right to be informed about the compulsory attendance policies. Students have the responsibility to arrive at school and attend classes on time on a regular basis. 

Parents/Guardians and students have the right to have access to USD 259 policies and procedures and a responsibility to be aware of the district policies and procedures regarding all policies. 

Parents/Guardians and students have the right to be informed about the zero tolerance policies on weapons, drug trafficking, and battery of staff, and the responsibility each year to sign a form indicating awareness of the consequences of violating these policies (Board of Education Policies 1462, 1464, 1465, 1466). 

Parents/Guardians and students have the right to: 

• Be treated with courtesy and respect as individuals 

• Expect a safe and secure learning environment 

• Grieve any alleged violation of their rights by a staff member (Board of Education Policy 1468) 

• Be informed of school rules and board of education policies and know the following behaviors are not permitted (Board of Education Policies 1462, 1464, 1465, 1466): 

• Fighting in school, on the school bus, school property, or any school activity 

• Smoking/Vaping 

• Actions, words, or gestures that show disrespect to staff members or other students 

• Dress or appearance that is in violation of published school rules and BOE policies 

• Vandalism 

• Loitering in school buildings or on school property 

• Causing a false fire alarm or bomb threat 

• Disrupting regular school activities 

• Arson, setting a fire; fireworks or chemical devices 

• Extortion 

• Possession or use of weapons 

• Possession and/or use of electronic communication devices at school or school activities during the day 

• Selling, possession, and/or use of illegal substances 

Parents/Guardians and students have the responsibility at all times to be good citizens and to follow the rules and regulations as set by the school administration and the school district. 

Parents/Guardians and students have the right to know that information contained in educational records is confidential (Board of Education Policy 5501). Parents/Guardians and students have a responsibility not to mislead the school regarding name, address, date of birth, and telephone number. 

Parents/Guardians have the right to know that upon request, the non-custodial parent is entitled to all parental rights to the extent such rights are not restricted by a court order. Non-custodial parents have a responsibility to make a yearly request, in writing, to the building administrator to receive official information regarding their child (Board of Education Policy 5503). 

Schedule Changes  

Student schedules at Wichita North High School are developed each spring based on student course requests, graduation requirements, and overall enrollment needs. Careful course selection during enrollment is important, as schedules are built for the entire school year.  

Schedule changes are limited and are intended to support valid educational needs while helping students begin classes successfully at the start of each semester. In accordance with BOE Policy 1227, schedule changes are discouraged except for educationally appropriate reasons. 

Schedule Changes May Be Requested For 

• Missing class periods  

• Duplicate courses  

• Requesting a senior pass card  

• Missing a required graduation course  

Schedule Changes Will Not Be Made For 

• Preference for a different teacher, class period, or semester  

• Requests to be placed with friends or family members  

• Change of mind about a selected course  

• Student or parent preference alone  

• Withdrawal requests from Advanced Placement (AP) courses  

School Meals  

 Meals are served twice each school day with breakfast available from 7:30–7:55 a.m. and lunch served during the school’s designated lunch period. Students must have either their student ID card or cash to purchase meals. Student IDs also serve as lunch cards and are required for students receiving free or reduced meal benefits. Meal charging is not permitted. 

Second Chance Breakfast is available at multiple locations throughout the building after first/second period. Service ends one minute before the passing period concludes. 

Search & Seizure

When reasonable suspicion exists that a student’s person or property contains items that are illegal, disruptive, or may pose a danger to students or staff, school officials may conduct a search of the student and/or personal property. This may include, but is not limited to, backpacks, lockers, vehicles, and other personal belongings. 

Signs & Posters  

All signs and posters displayed at Wichita North High School must be approved by a sponsor and the principal before being posted. Approved posters must include a signature and date in the lower right-hand corner.  

Signs and posters displayed in the hallways should be removed after the event. 

Student IDs  

Student IDs help support a safe, secure, and organized school environment. Students must wear the school photo ID on a lanyard or clip upon entry. If students choose to use a clip it must be clipped on the front below the top of the shoulders and midpoint of the chest. Students who do not have a school I.D. card must purchase one for $3 from academy 4. Students at Wichita North High School are required to have their physical student ID with them at all times while in the building. 

Student IDs are required for: 

• Entering the building  

• Receiving school breakfast or lunch  

• Leaving campus during lunch  

• Obtaining a tardy pass  

• Signing in for Loss of Lunch  

• Attending school activities and events  

• Helping ensure the safety and security of all students and staff  

Students may be asked by staff members to present their ID at any time during the school day.

Textbooks & Instructional Materials  

Textbooks and instructional materials issued to students at Wichita North High School remain the property of Wichita Public Schools. Students are expected to properly care for materials and return them in acceptable condition at the end of the semester, school year, or upon withdrawal from school.  

Students and families may be charged for lost, damaged, or unreturned items.  

Tardy Policy 

Being on time helps create a positive learning environment and minimizes interruptions to instruction at Wichita North High School. Students are expected to be in their classroom or assigned area, seated and ready to learn, when the bell rings.  

Students arriving before the last 10 minutes of class report to the cafeteria to scan their student ID and receive a tardy slip before going to class. The tardy slip serves as the student’s admit pass into class. Students arriving with less than 10 minutes remaining in class will be marked absent and should report to their academy office. Passes from teachers, counselors, or administrators will be honored. Consideration may be given during inclement weather or building related issues such as bell malfunctions. 

Tips for Being On Time 

• Wake up on time 

• Arrive to school early 

• Be seated when the bell rings  

• Have materials ready before class begins  

• Obtain a written pass if you need to be in the hallway  

• Carry and wear your school ID  

• Obtain an admit slip if delayed by a teacher or staff member  

Tardy Consequences 

Students are allowed five tardies per semester. After the five free tardies, each additional tardy will result in a Loss of Lunch privilege for the following day. Lunch will still be provided during this time. 

Students assigned Loss of Lunch must have their school ID. Lunch will be served. Students without an ID may be required to obtain a replacement ID through the office. 

Loss of Lunch is served in G126. Students who fail to serve Loss of Lunch may be assigned additional disciplinary consequences, including suspension, in accordance with school expectations and administrative discretion. 

Transportation  

Students who live 2.5 miles or more from their assigned school may qualify for district transportation services. Students who miss the bus are expected to arrange their own transportation to school.  

Riding the school bus is a privilege. Students are expected to follow all district and state transportation rules and expectations. Bus privileges may be suspended or revoked for behavior or safety violations. 

USD 259 also offers the FirstView app, which allows families to track school buses in real time. Families may contact the school office for the security code needed to access the app.

Tutoring Support  

Wichita North High School offers tutoring opportunities to help students build confidence, improve grades, and receive additional academic support. Tutoring is available in the Library during the school day and is open to all students.  

Tutoring Times 

• During lunch each school day  

• During Open Advocacy on Tuesdays and Fridays from 2:30–3:20 pm  

• During Early Release Wednesdays from 2:30–3:20 pm  

Wednesday night after-school tutoring is from 3:30 – 6 pm in the cafeteria. 

Students are encouraged to take advantage of tutoring support whenever additional help is needed. 

Vending Machines  

Vending machines at Wichita North High School are available for student use before and after school and during passing periods. Students use vending machines at their own risk.  

The school office is unable to provide change or issue refunds for vending machine purchases. 

Visitors  

All visitors to Wichita North High School, including parents, guardians, alumni, and community members, must enter through the Main Entrance and check in at the front desk using the HallPass visitor management system. Visitors will receive a visitor badge that must be worn at all times while on campus.  

Students may not bring visitors to school during the school day. Recent attendees or graduates wishing to visit campus should do so outside of school hours or when school activities are not in session. 

Weather Procedures & Emergency Closings 

During severe weather or other dangerous conditions, the safety of students, staff, and families remains the top priority of Wichita Public Schools. Emergency procedures are in place for situations involving tornadoes, lightning, hail, or other hazardous weather conditions. 

If school is canceled or activities are postponed or rescheduled due to weather, updates will be shared on the Wichita Public Schools website, school websites, ParentLink notifications, and district social media accounts.

CHAMPS

CHAMPS is a quick and easy way for you to determine the appropriate behaviors for various school settings such as the classroom, hallways, cafeteria, etc. Each letter in CHAMPS stands for a different behavior expectation:

Conversation                              –How to communicate appropriately with others.

Help                                           –How you or who you should ask for help.

Activity                                       –What you will be doing.

Movement                                  – If you are able to move during the activity.

Participation                              – How to demonstrate that you are actively participating.

Success                                      – How to know you have been successful.

Be sure to check these expectations regularly, they can change from class to class and for different activities. School-wide CHAMPS expectations can be found on the next page.
